Blogging Caveat

September 19th, 2005 | 3 Comments | Posted in Other Stories

I never thought that crisis or depression only happens in, or are brought about by, real life situations. I was wrong. What seemed to be a harmless activity, an alternative outlet for creativity and diversion, can become a source of depression. I am talking about Blog Depression. And yes, Blog depression had become a growing epidemic in the cyberworld. It has affected bloggers to be disillusioned, taking long breaks, and in many cases simply closing up shop.

This growing problem somehow finds it way to the psyche of most of us bloggers whether we admit it or not. What is important is at least we know why and how it affects us. You might not know what hit you when depression suddenly sets in.

But hey, you have a real life to live, blogging depression finds its way easily to those who don’t have one. As a rule of thumb, just blog on and don’t let blogging bog your life. Take blogging as a therapeutic activity than the other way around.

Here’s a site that had come up with a pamphlet meant as a public service to help educate bloggers about this growing problem. You can download the complete blog depression pdf file from this site.

You are like a hurricane, There’s calm in your eye…

What do you think, Is this real or fake?

This is Real!

This is a real screen shot taken from Sky News (Ireland) broadcast. The text in the caption is supposed to be a declaration of President Bush on Hurricane Katrina to be “one of the worst disasters to hit the US”. Seemingly the quotation marks were inadvertently missed.

This may be a funny picture, but even without the quotation marks, the caption would still convey the same message apt for the person in picture. A message that conveys yet another reality - with or without the hurricane.

Tatlong Pinoy, Tatlong laban, Tatlong Bagsak!!!

Manny Pacquiao stopped Hector Velasquez by TKO in the 6th round.

Fil-Am Brian Viloria (right) scored a first round knockout over Eric Ortiz to win the WBC Light Flyweight championship.

Rey Bautista (right) knocked out Felix Flores in the third round of a scheduled eight round bout.

Mabuhay kayo Manny Pacquiao! Brian Viloria! at Rey Bautista! Binigyan ninyo nang pag-asa at karangalan ang ating bayan.

Sana ang susunod na laban, laban sa mga TRAPONG ganid at gahaman…at dapat first round pa lang knockout agad ang mga lintek na pulitiko!

It’s Football Season Once Again!

September 12th, 2005 | 3 Comments | Posted in Sports and Hobbies

It’s UEFA Champions League Season once again. The UEFA Champions League 2005-2006 season Group Stage competition will kick-off on Wednesday, September 13,2005.

There are 32-teams in the group stage. The clubs are split into eight groups of four teams, who play home and away against each of their pool opponents between September and December to decide which two teams from each pool advance to the first knockout round. The third-place finishers in each pool enter the UEFA Cup Round of 32. The 2005/06 UEFA Champions League final will be played at the Stade de France in Paris as the competition returns to its roots in its 50th anniversary year.

My teams for this Champions League season are Real Madrid and Barcelona. This season will be the debut of a strong Brazilian reinforced line up of the Los Galacticos. Real’s new recruits, Robinho and Julio Cesar Baptista will add glitter to the starry team up of Ronaldo, Raul, Zidane and Beckham. And of course there’s also Barcelona, also led by Brazilian stars, Ronaldinho and Deco, which remains a favorite in the Champions League.

Too much excitement is promised by this footballing season. The UEFA Champions League season serves as a curtain raiser to the most awaited event of the footballing world - the FIFA World Cup which will kick-off on June 2006 in Germany. Immediately after the UEFA Champions League finals in May 2006, FIFA World Cup begins.

UEFA Champions League matches are shown in live telecast at ESPN and Star Sports Channels. In the midst of an ongoing political imbroglio our country is facing today, this footballing season will be a perfect respite.

Not once but twice

September 10th, 2005 | 2 Comments | Posted in My Mindanao

My alma mater, the Mindanao State University (MSU) has never been free from political manipulation and control by those who hold power. Its mandate as an academic institution is always compromised by accomodations of vested political interests.

The term of office of the incumbent MSU President ends this month. Months ago, a search committee composed of academicians had been established to screen and process the selection of the next MSU President. Unfortunately, none of those shortlisted by the search committee, all highly qualified for the position, all competent academicians and alumni of MSU, fit Malacanang’s preference.

Instead, Malacanang has appointed Gen. Ricardo de Leon, recently retired Deputy Director General of the Philippine National Police, as MSU OIC President. Malacanang said that De Leon’s appointment is “temporary” and is intended only to cleanse MSU of alleged corruption and pave the transition for the next MSU President. When this temporary status will end only Malacanang knows.

There are no other educational institutions in our country where Generals have been appointed to the position of President. Malacanang has done this to MSU not only once but twice. Immediately after the ouster of the Marcos dictatorship, Malacanang appointed a General as MSU’s OIC President. Now, another General will take the helm of Mindanao’s premiere academic institution.

Malacanang has a weird way of carrying out a transition to MSU’s presidency. Until they find an able stooge, they pass the leadership of this academic institution to military officials. One can never find a classic example of militarizing an academic institution than this perverted practice.

Even if one has to believe in the rationale of cleansing corruption in the MSU system, appointing a General does not fit the equation. It is simply ridiculous, unless the university charter is changed and MSU is transformed into a new military academy. Cleansing corruption in an educational institution can be done by any qualified, competent academician. Why give the task of ridding corruption to someone coming from an institution which is itself riddled with graft and corruption?

Political appointments to key positions in the bureaucracy is Government’s prerogative. Everyone knows that this practice is meant to maintain control and perpetuate patronage politics and not for any other reason. Extending such practice to institutions of learning not only strengthens corruption in the system but corrupts the minds of the youth in whom we place our country’s future.
